Ikigai is a Japanese concept that can roughly be defined as ‘the reason to get up in the morning’.
As Hector Garcia Puigcerver puts it, “Essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.”
Everyone has an ikigai, but not everybody can identify it. Why? Because in order to recognize it, we must embark on a conscious journey of truth to ourselves, an expedition of honest answers about what we love, what we do, and why we do it.
And this is not a simple task.
Experts on the subject, often refer to the graph below as the map for the ikigai quest. Basically, your ikigai lies at the center of interconnecting circles that represent four core aspects of our lives:What you love doing
What you are good at
What you can get paid for
What the world needs
Identifying Your Ikigai - by Marc Winn
Your ikigai lies at the centre of those interconnecting circles. If you are lacking in one area, you are missing out on your life’s potential. Not only that, but you are missing out on your chance to live a long and happy life.
I have had a long time obsession with outliers, and interestingly enough, there are some outlier communities in the world that live far longer than average. If you are interested in learning more about this, watch Dan Buettner’s TED talk on How to Live to 100+.
There are some surprising conclusions about the factors that create a long and healthy life. One of the most significant factors is ikigai. The secret to a long and happy life is not to live in the hope of a great life tomorrow. It is to live with intention today. What I love is that this is possible not only at the individual level, but entire communities can learn from it, as well.
